Functional Lab Testing
Have you had tests run by your doctor, only to be told everything is “normal?” But you just KNOW something isn’t right.
Standard testing used by GPs typically look for disease and more serious conditions. Functional lab testing is different. These tests are used to identify the root cause of your symptoms, restore your body’s function and help you achieve optimal health.
Lab Testing Options
These are the most common tests ordered. Other tests may be available on request.
GI-MAP
This test provides a comprehensive map of your microbiome (gut health). It measures your zonulin levels to determine whether you may have “leaky gut”, which is at the root cause of many chronic symptoms and conditions.
It provides information on the balance of bacteria, and the presence of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites.
This test is beneficial for anyone experiencing the following:
IBS/IBD
Digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal cramps or pain
SIBO
Allergies
Food sensitivities
Fatigue
This is the best test to start with for most people.
This is a stool test that you complete at home.
SIBO BREATH TEST
The SIBO Lactulose Breath Test helps identify SIBO or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, which is behind many common digestive symptoms.
This test is beneficial for anyone experiencing the following:
Digestive symptoms like diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal cramping, bloating, burping and gas
Reflux, GERD or GORD
Food sensitivities
Joint pain
Skin rashes
Iron and B12 deficiency
Respiratory symptoms such as asthma
For most people, I’d recommend starting with the GI-MAP. If you have delayed bloating that starts 2+ hours after eating, this test may be right for you. If you’d like guidance on whether to take the GI-MAP or SIBO test, email us on hello@frandargaville.com.
This is a breath test that you complete at home.
FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING
Are you experiencing symptoms but can’t put your finger on what’s causing them? Or maybe you’re having trouble identifying your “trigger foods”.
Food sensitivities can contribute to many symptoms - even seemingly unrelated symptoms such as fatigue and brain fog.
My preference is to start with an elimination diet as this is the gold standard for identifying food sensitivities, but if you’ve tried that and are still struggling, this can be a helpful tool.
You can even be sensitive to even the healthiest of foods, like fruit and veggies, which makes it difficult to identify problem foods. This is made even more challenging by the fact that the symptoms of IgG mediated food intolerances are delayed, and therefore can’t be easily linked to a particular food.
This test is beneficial for anyone experiencing the following:
IBS/IBD
Digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal cramps or pain
Fatigue
Brain fog
Allergies
Skin conditions such as eczema or acne
This is a blood test. You are sent the kit to your home, and you will take it to a local pathology clinic to have the test done.
STRESS AND ADRENAL HORMONES
When your body is under stress, or you’re experiencing long-term impacts of stress such as fatigue, anxiety or brain fog, adrenal testing gives us an understanding of your body’s stress response and the state of your adrenals and HPA axis.
This test is beneficial for anyone experiencing the following:
Anxiety
Headaches
Brain Fog
Fatigue
Salt, sugar or caffeine cravings
Low moods
Lack of stamina
Difficulty sleeping
Thyroid dysfunction
Impaired immune system
This is a saliva test that you complete at home.
HORMONE TESTING
If you have signs of hormonal imbalance, it’s important to get an understanding of what’s really going on.
Common signs of hormonal imbalance include:
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Fatigue
PMS, painful periods and mood swings
Acne and breakouts
Difficulty sleeping
This is a dried urine and/or saliva test that you complete at home.
