Ah, the power of perspective.
As I’m writing this, I’m heading home to Sydney from an awesome workshop weekend in Brisbane as a Group Leader for the NTA’s Nutritional Therapy Practitioner training program.
As I sit here in the emergency exit row (hey, it’s no business class but I’m digging the legroom), I’m thinking back to this very day last year.
This time last year, I was doing the same thing, but things looked a little different.
When we’re going through the motions, it can be hard to remember just how far we’ve come.
At the NTA workshop last year, I barely made it through the weekend. Brain fog and fatigue made it incredibly challenging to focus. I was absolutely cooked after the full on weekend of exams, learning and socialising. To top it all off, my flight home was cancelled late Sunday night, which meant hours of waiting around in the airport followed by a brief stint in an airport hotel from midnight to 4.30am. I really was the walking dead on the redeye flight home the next morning.
There are two ways of looking at how I’m feeling this time around. Here’s the first: I’m a little tired, I have a bit of discomfort in my shoulders from spending lots of time sitting down, I’m a bit bloated from unfamiliar foods. I could choose to focus on those things, focus on what’s not quite right instead of what’s awesome.
Or I could choose the other way. Woohoo! I’ve bloody done it! I’ve made it through four jam-packed nine hour days. I’m feeling energised and inspired. I feel strong.
If you’re finding yourself focusing on the negative, try shifting your perspective. You might still have fatigue, but how far have you come?
If you’re just getting started on your healing journey or still feel like you have a way to go, focus instead on how you want to feel in three, six and twelve months’ time. Write it down. Say it out loud and believe it. If you’re not quite convinced yet, fake it ‘til you make it. What you focus on grows. It really works.
