I'm Inspired: The Merrymaker Sisters

I was lucky enough to hear Carla and Emma Papas, aka 'The Merrymaker Sisters', speak a few weeks ago at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition Conference in Sydney. And man, they were passionate, beaming and full of energy!

If you haven't heard of them already (seriously? check 'em out!), The Merrymaker Sisters' blog is all about promoting health and happiness, with tons of awesome recipes, healthy lifestyle tips and words of wisdom on how to #followyourbliss.

You're making waves as The Merrymaker Sisters and inspiring women from across the globe to follow a healthy lifestyle. What inspired you to take this path?

Flash back to mid 2012, we were sick of feeling sick, fed up with counting calories, beyond tired from the guilt we felt after eating, with low self-esteem and terribly confused as to why we felt this way. We were in this obsessive whirlwind of fad diets, quick fixes and negative body image. When we looked around this seemed completely normal, everyone was spinning.

This unhealthy way of living needed to stop, so we searched for something that would work. REAL FOOD was our answer and the catalyst to creating The Merrymaker Sisters.

Being the food lovers we always have been, we started to share photos of our healthy foodie creations to our personal social media accounts and our followers started to grow organically. We loved it so much and wanted a place to document all of our recipes and thoughts so we googled ‘How to start a blog’ (seriously!). We both studied and worked in the Communication industry and were passionate about health and happiness and so we began The Merrymaker Sisters - it was like two passions perfectly intertwined!

Our overall mission for The Merrymaker Sisters is to create a healthy, happy, more magic filled world. We do that by creating a safe and fun community where everyone is welcome to come, learn and get inspired to make positive changes to their lives.

We haven’t looked back since starting our merrymaker journey in February 2013, and feel truly lucky to have found a career path that makes us happy and gives us a sense of fulfillment. We always say ‘To Merrymake, is to follow your bliss, passion, dream’ and that’s exactly what we’re doing.

What does your day on a plate look like?

Every day really is different! There’s a bit of travel involved with merrymakers which is always fun! But a general day at home in Canberra will involve lots of writing, recipe development, online product and content creation, photography, editing, creating newsletters, designing social media images, meetings, hiking, meditation, working out, socializing with friends and just having a whole lot of fun! We do it all... it's a two person team! There’s also lots of dance breaks!

It's the same with food! We change it up all the time. Some mornings we'll have our low fructose caramel slice for brekky with chai tea and other days it will be a green brekky bowl... sometimes it's nothing for brekky but we make a delish lunch like our stuffed eggplants! All the recipes on the blog... that's what we eat each and every day! It might just not look as pretty!

Follow your bliss!

If you could only share one nugget of wisdom, what would it be?

What you focus on grows. When you focus on the good, good stuff will grow.

Do you have a fave recipe to share with us?

We do! We'd LOVE to share our tasty paleo banana bread! It's seriously SO delish and super easy!

Paleo Banana Bread

3 ripe bananas mashed
1 ½ cups almond meal
¾ cup butter cubed (or coconut oil/ghee)
¾ cup walnuts chopped and 2 tbs. extra
1/4 cup raw honey (optional)
2 eggs
1 tsp. 100% vanilla extract
1 tsp. baking powder

1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a 20cm x 10 cm (8 x 4 inch) loaf tin with baking paper.
2. In a mix master cream the butter, honey, eggs and vanilla.
3. In a large bowl mix the almond meal, walnuts and baking powder.
4. Add the butter mixture and mashed bananas and stir until combined.
5. Transfer mixture in to prepared tin, sprinkle with extra walnuts and place in to the oven for 50 minutes or until it springs back when you lightly touch the top.
6. Allow to cool before you turn out, slice and serve!
