Book review: A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle

One of my most treasured books is A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle.

Tolle is known as one of the most spiritually influential people in the world.

He teaches that the main reason for your unhappiness is never the situation itself, rather it is your thoughts about it. The insight and exploration in this book really open your mind to a new way of thinking.

This is my favourite quote:

"See if you can catch the Voice in your head, perhaps in the very moment it complains about something, and recognise it for what it is: the Voice of the Ego, no more than a thought.

Whenever you notice that Voice you also realise that you are not the Voice, but the one who is aware of it. In fact you are the awareness that is aware of the Voice. In the background there is the awareness. In the foreground, there is the Voice, the Thinker. In this way you are becoming free of the Ego, free of the unobserved mind."

A New Earth is a wonderful book to read and the ideas are so simple, yet so profound. It was recommended to me by my brother, who has been a lifelong source of inspiration. I'm so grateful to have been introduced to it.

J.D. and I bought the audiobook, and we listen to it over and over in the car as we drive to and from work, or on long trips. I never tire of listening to Tolle's explanations of the human condition, namely our ego. The awareness this book provokes makes life and its complexities and stresses easier and all our concerns fade away as a new understanding takes hold.
